Frequently Asked Questions
What is PDF/A?
PDF/A is an ISO-standardized version of the PDF format designed for long-term archiving of electronic documents. Unlike standard PDFs, PDF/A requires that all content be self-contained (no external dependencies), fonts be embedded, and no encryption or JavaScript be used. This ensures the document can be rendered identically decades from now.
Which PDF/A version should I choose?
PDF/A-1b is the most widely supported version and works with almost all PDF/A validators and readers. PDF/A-2b adds support for layers and transparency, while PDF/A-3b additionally allows embedding of arbitrary file formats (like XML or spreadsheets) within the PDF. For general archiving, PDF/A-1b is recommended.
Is this fully PDF/A compliant?
This conversion provides a best-effort approximation of PDF/A compliance. It embeds fonts, strips encryption and JavaScript, and sets appropriate metadata. However, full PDF/A validation requires dedicated tools like veraPDF, and some aspects like color spaces and output intents are beyond client-side capabilities.
